Rock Candy

Every Christmas I've always bought a stick of Rock Candy for Bobby. This year, I got some for the girls too. They loved it (what child wouldn't, it's pure sugar!), so we decided it was high time to make some of our own. :)

It's a fun science project for the girls to watch too. It was perfect, Catherine enjoys "The Magic School bus", the one she watched today was perfect...it was about molecules, and sugar crystals....just too perfect!

So, here's what we have so far:

LOL, See my 2 little sillies peeking in there?! :)

Heat 1 cup of water and 2 cups of sugar, stirring frequently. Once the sugar is melted, add an additional 2 cups of sugar, continue heating until all sugar is dissolved. Pour into jar(s) add a drop of food color, stick (or string) cover w/wax paper. Let it set still (don't move the jars around, but keep it in an area you can observe it) for a week to form large formations of sugar crystals; Rock Candy.

Here's what it looks like just 6 hours afterwards. The molecules of sugar are already collecting together.

:) There's my other little silly peeking into the picture! :)
